The morning after an eventful press conference that kept the Chief selector busy answering questions on MS Dhoni’s future, MSK Prasad told India Today that they had their plans in place.”Our vision is very clear. We have to build a team for the World Cup. We have a core team ready and there are those who are on the fringe. We have to try out a few more players. Once we have tried enough players, four months before the World Cup, which is about twelve months from now, we will play with the main team. If there are 25 T20s maybe in 10-12 we will experiment,” he said.Exactly what the plan was for the World Cup 2019 too. But the middle order remained unsettled till the very end. “Definitely, there are lessons. One can learn from that,” Prasad said. But India’s surge in the game’s fastest format has been the slowest. They won the inaugural World T20 in 2007 when Indian cricket was still recovering from the sudden death of World Cup in West Indies did not see it coming. With anticipation raised in every subsequent World T20, India has continued to fall short of the finish line.advertisementThe 2007 win set the IPL up which grew from strength to strength but India’s T20 selection approach has only mirrored its ODI ways. Has the Prasad led selection committee, done any course correction this time?MS Dhoni by opting out made their task a lot easier. Dinesh Karthik has made umpteen comebacks but they seem to have looked past him now. CSK’s value pick Kedar Jadhav doesn’t find a place in India’s T20 mix. In come the likes of Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer – not exactly new faces but rewarded for scoring runs with the A team in West Indies. With Bumrah out and spin twins Kul-Cha not picked, there are new openings in the bowling department too. Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed and Deepak Chahar who missed the flight to England now get an opportunity to stake a claim for T20 World Cup 2020. Does Bumrah and Shami’s absence blunt India’s death overs resources? Prasad says he is “happy with the way Khaleel is shaping up”.Krunal Pandya who was drafted in India’s T20 squad this year should believe he is in for a long haul. Mayank Markande whose mysterious googlies in IPL earned him an India cap has lost his India spot after a solitary game to fellow Mumbai Indians leggie Rahul Chahar. Off spinning all-rounder, Washington Sundar too makes it to the West Indies bound T20 squad. With T20 action scheduled at home against South Africa, Bangladesh, West Indies and Zimbabwe in the next six months, if Prasad’s T20 vision is to be believed, expect more rotation in the spin department. Shreyas Gopal and Axar Patel could get a look in too.The selectors may have missed a trick by ignoring the young bright Shubhman Gill. He looked comfortable at the top of the order too for KKR last year. Gill sent another reminder by delivering a Man of the series-winning show against West Indies A. “Shubhman Gill will be there. Fortunately, we have a lot of A tours so players can be eased into the main side,” he said. With Gill waiting in the wings, Shikhar Dhawan will need to keep clocking the runs at the pace T20 demands. Prithvi Shaw and Sanju Samson are yet to make their India T20 debuts but having taken down the best of world attacks in IPL, they should be in contention.India’s selectors have been criticized in the past for fast-tracking IPL performers into India squads. But this is one format where the IPL to India progression should be par for course. Prasad’s team’s vision statement for T20 2020 will be up for test too. Also Read | Have the selectors looked past MS Dhoni? Also Read | How Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey are key to solving India’s middle-order puzzleFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
