How every Premier League club’s stadium could benefit from safe standing

first_img21 21 Brighton – Amex Stadium – North StandThe South stand at Brighton’s relatively new stadium often largely contains visiting supporters and so the loudest home fans gather in the North.__________________________________________________________________________ Tottenham – New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – South StandSpurs’ new stadium will without doubt be the best ground in the league when it comes to safe standing. The single-tiered 17,500 capacity South Stand is already being future proofed for rail seating while it is being built and will provide an immense atmosphere when completed.__________________________________________________________________________ On June 25, the possibility of introducing safe standing to English football will be debated in UK Parliament.A petition to have the matter discussed reached 100,000 signatures, prompting MPs to address the issue.Should the idea be approved, it would likely trigger an influx of ‘rail seating’ (pictured above) to Premier League stadiums. This would undoubtedly lead to vastly improved atmospheres across the country, as it would provide each team’s most vociferous supporters with one designated area in which they could gather together. But where would this affect each Premier League stadium, which stand or area of their ground would they choose?Take a look below at every Premier League stadium’s most likely space for designated safe standing.__________________________________________________________________________ 21 21 21 21 21 21 Manchester United – Old Trafford – Stretford End West StandUnited’s Stretford End is like Liverpool’s Kop in that it is one of the most famous stands in the country; both are just crying out for rail seating. The steep, two-tiered monster creates a wall of noise in its current form, goodness knows what it would generate with safe standing in use.__________________________________________________________________________ 21 Huddersfield – John Smith’s Stadium – Fantastic Media North StandLike at Everton, the single-tiered Chadwick Lawrence South Stand would arguably be most suitable for safe standing. However Huddersfield’s active support are seated in the Fantastic Media Stand while away fans take pride of place in the Chadwick Lawrence.__________________________________________________________________________ 21 Southampton – St Mary’s – Chapel South StandThe Saints’ two goal-end stands are almost identical. With the Northam containing away fans, it is obvious that the single-tiered Chapel Stand would be most appropriate for rail seats.__________________________________________________________________________ 21 21 Manchester City – Etihad Stadium – North StandCity have recently expanded their South Stand to the point where it is now an enormous three-tiered behemoth, however half of it currently belongs to visitors. Unless this changes, the North end would have to be home to safe standing at the Etihad.__________________________________________________________________________ 21 Rail seating like this could be implemented in English football 21 Chelsea – Stamford Bridge – Matthew Harding North StandWhile the Shed was traditionally the place for Chelsea’s hard-core support, it is now home to away fans in one corner. Some active supporter groups still operate out of the Shed, but the loudest voices certainly come from the Matthew Harding on match days.__________________________________________________________________________ Fulham – Craven Cottage – Hammersmith West EndThe Cottagers’ famous Putney End (which features the ground’s actual cottage) plays host to away fans. Therefore, despite its shallow appearance, the Hammersmith End would be best suited to accomodate rail seating for the newly-promoted side’s home faithful.__________________________________________________________________________ Newcastle United – St James’ Park – Sir John Hall North StandThe upper tier of Newcastle’s Sir John Hall Stand is home to away supporters, but the lower section is so impressive that it could probably take up the Geordies’ safe standing contingent on its own.__________________________________________________________________________ Bournemouth – Vitality Stadium – Steve Fletcher North StandAway fans at the Vitality are seated in the East Stand, so either goal-end section would work for safe standing here. The Steve Fletcher Stand is the more modern and steepest of the two and so would likely be most fitting.__________________________________________________________________________ Leicester – King Power Stadium – Spion Kop South StandThe North Stand at Leicester is made up of the away fans and the family area, therefore the single-tiered Spion Kop at the opposite end is far more fitting for safe standing.__________________________________________________________________________ Burnley – Turf Moor – Jimmy McIlroy East StandThe two-tiered Jimmy McIlroy stand at would be most suitable for safe standing at Turf Moor as away fans are housed behind the opposite goal in the David Fishwick. The upper tier’s steep appearance would add to the already increased atmosphere.__________________________________________________________________________ Liverpool – Anfield – Kop South StandAnfield’s famous Kop is the ideal area for safe standing. A giant, single-tiered stand, laden with a history of housing Liverpool’s most vociferous supporters. The Kop bears resemblance to Dortmund’s Sudtribune (albeit not quite as big).__________________________________________________________________________ 21 21 Wolves – Molineux – Sir Jack Hayward South StandIn 2018/19, Wolves will return to the Premier League and could instantly boast one of the most impressive grounds in the division were safe standing to be implemented. The two-tiered Sir Jack Hayward Stand makes for an impressive potential area of rail seating. getty 21 21 getty Cardiff – Cardiff City Stadium – Canton StandThe opposite single-tiered goal ends of the Cardiff City Stadium are near identical, but with away fans designated into the Grange Stand, it appears the Canton end would be far more appealing for safe standing.__________________________________________________________________________ 21 21 21 Watford – Vicarage Road – The RookeryThe Hornets’ Rookery, situated on the south side of the ground, suits safe standing perfectly as it is already the home of The 1881, Watford’s fan-created singing section. Watford have two single-tiered ends like multiple other clubs, though the Vicarage Road Stand is divided among home and away fans, usually in a 50/50 split.__________________________________________________________________________ Everton – Goodison Park – Howard Kendall Gwladys Street North StandThe Toffees’ most passionate fans are located in the Gwladys Street Stand, meaning that safe standing would have to go there were it to be introduced at Goodison. However, the single-tiered Park End stand at the other end would probably be more suitable based on appearance alone.__________________________________________________________________________ West Ham – London Stadium – Bobby Moore North StandThe atmosphere at West Ham’s new London Stadium has left a lot to be desired for Hammers fans. Adding safe standing to the Bobby Moore end could help improve this, but admittedly the ex-Olympic Stadium is really not designed for such an idea.__________________________________________________________________________ Crystal Palace – Selhurst Park – Holmesdale Road South StandPalace already have a strong atmosphere with the Holmesdale Fanatics group housed in the bottom left hand corner of their Holmesdale Road Stand. They have been some of the strongest campaigners for safe standing and would be very angry if it ended up in a different area of their own ground!__________________________________________________________________________ Arsenal – Emirates Stadium – North BankWhile the Clock End does play host to some noisy Arsenal supporters, it also contains some away fans. The Gunners’ North Bank consists solely of home faithful and could be quite the spectacle if safe standing were introduced to its upper and lower tiers.__________________________________________________________________________last_img read more
