Berbice man jailed for failing to pay taxi

first_imgA Berbician will spend the next six months in jail after he failed to pay debts he incurred while using a taxi.Gajeshwaririto Sewnarine admitted that he committed the offence when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday.The court heard that on December 14, 2018, at Laluni Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he incurred debts of $30,000 by hiring motor car HC 7134 and failing to make payments.In his defence, Sewnarine told Magistrate McGusty that he attempted to make payments, but faced setbacks from the bank.However, the Virtual Complainant (VC) related that on the day when payments were supposed to be made, he transported the defendant to the bank and waited outside. He said that he was left waiting for the entire day outside the bank. However, he realised that something was amiss after the bank closed and Sewnarine failed to return.A report was made to the Police and surveillance footage showed that Sewnarine left the bank shortly after he arrived. As such, McGusty jailed Sewnarine, who could not give a date when he would be able to pay the taxi driver.last_img read more
