Watch Mike Dillon Unleash An Army Of Percussionists At Summer Camp [Videos]

first_imgMadman Mike Dillon gathered together a veritable army under the banner of the Punk Rock Percussion Consortium for one of the hottest sets at the 2018 Summer Camp Music Festival, which included host band moe.‘s own Jim Loughlin, STS9’s Zach Velmer and Matt Butler of the Everyone Orchestra. If anyone would be capable of taking over the world through the sheer power of overwhelming rhythm it would surely be Dillon. Over his storied career he has collaborated with everyone from chart-topping shiny superstars to shady DIY acts, and all points in-between with a singular, uber-aggressive voice that is his and his alone.Dillon is clearly not a proponent of the “Less Is More” school of thought, and his gleeful embrace of excess is what makes his consortium such a joy to watch. Thanks to the melodic tones generated by the various vibraphones, xylophones and marimbas, there was an incredible dynamism that is often lacking in percussive gatherings such as these. In conducting this dozen-person ensemble Dillon managed to shine in a new way, showing a fine sense of balance and respect for his assembled cast. Each player was presented with a chance to show off their skills and, to a one, they all made the absolute most of their time in the spotlight. The set took place on Summer Camp’s sun-facing Moonshine Stage on Saturday as the day’s temperature soared to over 95 degrees. Though the players and the fans were visibly fighting to stay hydrated and upright, the energy never dipped thanks to the sheer force of Dillon’s will and a beat that simply could not be denied.
