‘I think you’ve got to let him go’ – Barton believes Everton should let Stones join Chelsea

first_imgJoey Barton believes Everton must sell John Stones to Chelsea if the defender does not want to play for the club any more – but only at the right price.Stones has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park all summer and handed in a transfer request this week to force through the transfer. And Barton, a lifelong Toffees fan, says he would prefer the club allow the England international to leave rather than keep a player who does not want to be there.“If he really wants to go and doesn’t want to play for Everton then I think you’ve got to let him go,” said Barton, who signed for Burnley on Thursday.“I’d never want a player who didn’t want to play for Everton and Everton are the type of club, with that tradition and history, that if you don’t want to play for Everton then they have to let him go and at a price that is good for them.“Do I see this happening before Tuesday? I don’t think so, not after what has been said.“It’s great to see Bill Kenwright, the board and Martinez dig their feet in and say ‘no, we want to keep this boy’. It’s refreshing to see someone stand up to these billionaires.”However, Barton sympathised with the situation the 21-year-old has found himself in and credited Stones for how he has conducted himself during the saga.“I’m very surprised because when I heard about it a couple of months ago I thought it was inevitable,” added Barton on Drivetime.“You can understand John Stones, Champions League, Mourinho, London and all those attractions but equally, he has handled himself with an enormous amount of credit.“Does he need have to play Champions League football? Does he need to challenge for titles week in week out to improve more as a player? Or does he stay at Everton and play another 100 games and then look to progress?“Obviously over the last week it has got a bit messy, I don’t know if that is down to the boy though.”last_img
