Letterkenny Golf News:With a welcome respite from the recent rain and snowstorms, Barnhill regulars took to the course with relish over the weekend. And with the fairways and greens showing remarkable resilience to the inclement weather of late, congratulations must be paid to the greens convenor, greenkeeping staff and, indeed, the club’s committees of the past few years who had initiated and implemented the course preservation scheme of which the club hopes that the weekly lotto will help to sustain. Making a long-awaited return to the winner’s podium on Saturday was cat.2 handicapper and club Ulster Cup team captain Charlie Coughlan , returning a very impressive 40pts. Having been out of contention for most of last season with a knee injury, Charlie showed his intention to make up for lost time when, having bogeyed three in a row on front nine for 19pts., showed his resiliance with a birdie at 14th helping him to an inward nine of 21pts and first place. Coming a close second, just one point behind, was single handicapper Kieran Sweeney returning a card that told us that, following a birdie at 10th, Kieran was only two over par coming off 14th, [32pts], double bogeyed 15th, and finished with 39pts. Best gross on the day was the ever present Kevin Kiely with 30 gross points. Sunday 8th Confined competition, again played in dry, intermitten sunshine with that spring “nip” in the air, was won by the 2014 President’s Prizewinner Eamonn O’ Carroll who, despite double bogeys at 4th and 12th, recorded equal scores of 19pts on both nines, 38pts, to take top place from Hugh Gallagher who would rue his double bogey at 17th. Relegated to third on BOT was Liam Sweeney , also on 37pts.Congratulations to Letterkenny Golf Club members Finnian O’ Doherty and Conor Mc Gettigan on winning the gross and nett sections respectively, playing in the North Western Alliance at Portsalon on Saturday last.Following is club’s Team Captains list for 2015.
