Celebrate Heritage During Museum Weekend

first_imgNova Scotians are encouraged to share museum memories and make new ones during the 12th annual Museum Weekend, June 9 and 10. The celebrations will include the launch of a new heritage website, featuring a Blast in the Past contest, and a lineup of events at museums throughout the province. The heritage website, www.novascotiaheritage.ca, provides up-to-date information about heritage events and organizations across Nova Scotia. Beginning on Museum Weekend and continuing until September, the Blast in the Past contest will invite people to write about memorable museum, archives and heritage experiences. The person with the best story each month will receive a Nova Scotia Museum family pass, providing free admission to the 27 provincial museums for a year. “Nova Scotians truly value our rich natural and cultural heritage, and our many museums play a central role in preserving, interpreting and showcasing it,” said Len Goucher, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. “I encourage everyone to share their museum experiences in our contest and to take in some of the fun and educational events happening across the province during Museum Weekend.” With more than 100 museums throughout Nova Scotia, there are many heritage-related activities to enjoy. Visitors can play 18th-century games at Perkins House in Liverpool, savour a first taste of the summer at the Rhubarb Round-up at Fisherman’s Life Museum at Oyster Pond, or be mesmerized by a magic show at Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro. Or they can celebrate all things Gaelic at Highland Village in Iona, Victoria Co., discover Pirates! Myth and Reality, a new exhibit at Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, or drop by to say happy birthday to 85-year-old Gus the gopher tortoise at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax. Many community museums will also offer a variety of events for Museum Weekend, such as the heritage walk hosted by the Urban Farm Museum in Spryfield, Halifax Regional Municipality. Information on Museum Weekend activities at the 27 provincial museums is available on the Nova Scotia Museum website at http://museum.gov.ns.ca .last_img
