Ostroskey recently announced the cause of the August 4, 2019 fire at 111 Locust Street in Woburn was the improper disposal of smoking materials. The 8:17 p.m. fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damages. Sixteen residents from four units in the building were displaced. The fire started on a shelf inside a storage closet on the patio. An ashtray, lighter and burned package of cigarettes along with combustible household items were found in the area of origin. The Woburn Fire Department, the Woburn Police Department, and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal jointly investigated this fire.“Fortunately, no one was injured but exterior smoking fires can threaten our densely built neighborhoods,” said Chief Adgate. “They can burn for a long time undetected by occupants or interior smoke alarms and spread to multiple structures.”“As we move smokers outside for health reasons, we have seen the number of smoking fires that start on patios, porches and decks dramatically increase,” said Fire Marshal Ostroskey. “It’s important to put out all smoking materials in a can of sand. All the way, Every time.”The Department of Fire Services has created new public service announcements in English and Spanish on this topic.
